Mergers and Acquisitions: A CEO Short Story by Sean Ryan

Harrison Hamill is running from something. He runs through a dark wooded area and looks over his shoulder. Something is chasing him and gaining ground.Harrison falls. He looks up as it leaps at him from the shadows. He struggles with it and flips it, now seen as a man, onto his back.Harrison throws back his fist to attack, but stops. The attacker looks like him. Harrison's eyes grow large as he looks at the man looking at him. It is him.A phone rings somewhere.Harrison wakes in his bed, dripping with sweat and breathing heavily.Harrison runs his hands through his hair and looks down at his ringing phone.“Morning Jason. Yes yes, I’m fine, just overslept. What? Now that is disappointing. Call a meeting for nine. I’ll be there in twenty. Thanks,” he says into his phone.Harrison throws down the phone and walks towards the shower.Harrison Hamill walks through the halls of Phoebus headquarters with an air of pride. He knows he's the CEO. The people he passes know it as well. He loves that about his job.His long blond hair hangs over his custom tailor-made suit. Walking beside him is Jason, his personal assistant.“I’m very disappointed with this news. I hope you have informed everyone I’m not happy?” Harrison says to Jason.“I have...” Jason says.“And does anyone have a plan on how to fix this?” Harrison asks as they continue through the hallway.“It is on the agenda of your meeting at nine...” Jason continues as the CEO approaches the water fountain, distracted by another conversation.“Forget it. You worry too much. Hamill is a pussy cat. If you can’t get it finished no sweat, just make up some story...” one executive comments to another. The executive notices the CEO and tries to quickly change the subject. “That's what he told me anyway, I sure didn't believe him,...oh, good morning sir,” the executive says to Harrison, offering his hand to him.The CEO doesn’t respond but walks into a nearby men's room and closes the door, leaving Jason on the other side. The CEO walks in and splashes water on his face, before looking at himself in the mirror.“They think you are weak... a pushover,” he speaks to his own reflection.“But I’m the CEO of this corporation. The boss...” he replies.“Only by name. If you want respect, you have to show strength....” he says.“People respect me. They...” he says.“They respect you?” He says laughing. “Like those fools outside. They think you are nothing and why not. You act like nothing,” he says.“Time to man up. Take control. You’re their leader. Act like it. Surround yourself with winners, nothing less. If you want something take it...” he shouts at himself.“Sir, are you OK?” Jason shouts in from the other side of the door. The CEO studies his own image. His expression and posture slowly changes. He smiles and tilts his head slightly.“Sir...” Jason shouts as he pushes open the door.“Just a moment,” Harrison replies as he pushes back the door, hitting Jason in the nose.“Great things await you. The only way to get respect is through fear. You need to stop acting like a loser!” The CEO says. The CEO stares at himself for a couple of seconds before opening the door and charging past Jason.Jason looks inside to see who the CEO was talking with. The bathroom is empty. He looks at the sink. The water in the sink is boiling hot.Jason struggles to keep up. The CEO’s pace is now much faster, as if he's a man with a purpose. The CEO pushes through the main doors to the meeting room and holds the doors open as he observes the room. The door handles melt under his grip. Melted metal drips onto the wooden floor, burning it on contact. The CEO walks in, but everyone appears to be oblivious to the fact that the boss has entered the room.People of various nationalities and genders sit at a large oak meeting table. All continue with their own conversations.A row of screens on a far wall show other business leaders from various locations around the world.“Could someone be so gracious as to tell me where I can find our head of acquisitions and mergers?” Harrison shouts. The room becomes immediately silent. The CEO walks rapidly to the head of the table. He grabs hold of the table with both hands and takes a long deep breath. He looks around the table. All eyes are on him. Everyone looks around at each other and back at the CEO.“Anyone? Mr. Lee are you with us?” he asks. One particularly nervous executive catches the CEO’s eye and draws his attention to one of the teleconference screens on the wall.Harrison almost runs to the wall, and when he gets to it, he looks into the screen and smiles.“Mr. Lee?” he asks.On the screen, Mr. Lee nods and gulps loudly.“You’re fired!” Harrison screams as he grabs the screen on the wall with both hands. The surface of the screen begins to bubble and crackle as it starts to melt. Within a couple of seconds all that remains of the screen, is a mark on the wall and a pile of melted material at the CEO’s feet. The CEO wipes his hands together and walks back to the head of the table. He takes a long deep breath and sits down.“Now. I figured I had surrounded myself with the best and the brightest. Until I turned on the news this morning to learn that Olympus corporation has somehow managed to acquire amajority share in the world's biggest technology company...” he says.He gazes around the table at the collection of still nervous executives.“Now I don’t care if you fill your days talking about golf or whatever reality show you were watching last night. But I do expect you to at least be aware of when our greatest rivalmanages to acquire control of THE most advanced and profitable technology company on the eve of our own exact same announcement!” he screams as he slams the desk with both hands.Harrison raises his hand and Jason runs to his side with a small cup of herbal tea.He picks up the cup and takes a sip. The tea is cold. The CEO looks at Jason with disgust.Jason attempts to take the cup back, but the CEO continues to hold it, refusing to let it go. The tea inside the cup starts to bubble and boil in his hand.He takes another sip and smiles. Jason nods and steps backwards.“Now I was hoping I would get a barrage of suggestions of how we can fix this...” he asks as he looks around the room.“But what do I get? A bunch of rabbits in headlights," he continues. “Okay. Looks like we need to shake things up a little. Everyone at the left of the table please raise you hands."The people on the left of the table look at the CEO and then at each other, as they hesitate before raising their hands. The CEO smiles widely.“You’re all fired. Clear out your desks. If I even see you in the hallway after this meeting, I’ll have you thrown through the nearest window,” he says. The executives on the left slowly begin to stand.“Leave!” He screams before taking another sip of his tea.The CEO takes a deep breath.“Now...” he says as he looks at his watch, “the rest of you have exactly four hours to pull together some ideas, some way of fixing this. Be creative, surprise me...” he says as he stands.“But make no mistake...I want this fixed, or I may forget to the open the window first," he says as he stares at the group of even more terrified executives. The CEO walks quickly from the room, followed closely by his assistant, as they make their way into the hallway.“I need you to move my ten o'clock meeting. I have to dump some of this anxiety,” Harrison says as he enters the elevator, leaving the assistant standing on the other side. The CEO kneels in the center of the room. He is blind-folded and dressed in a white martial arts suit. His trainer walks around him in a circle.“The objective of this exercise is for you to focus without the limitations of vision. To be more at one with your surroundings," the Trainer says as he raises both hands.Three armed attackers run at the CEO.He leaps to his feet and kicks the first against the wall.A second attacker swings a sword at his head and the CEO easily ducks the sword, diving out of the way. He punches the man in the groin, quickly taking the wind right out of him.The third attacker strikes the CEO in the face with a bat, knocking him onto his back. The CEO jumps back up and wipes the blood from his mouth. The man attacks again and Harrison sidesteps and sweeps him.Knocking the man backwards, he grabs the man and snaps his neck before he hits the ground. The trainer looks on, shocked at this display.“I see what you mean. Great lesson. Same time tomorrow?” The CEO asks as he removes his blindfold. The trainer just nods in reply as the CEO leaves. The CEO clenches both fists and bows at his trainer.“Just what I needed. Thanks,” he smiles as he leaves the room. The CEO enters his office. The room is massive and lavishly decorated.Jason follows him inside and Harrison turns to address him.“You know what, I think we need to change this layout. It’s too weak. What do you think?” he asks.Jason opens his mouth to speak but doesn’t get the chance.“Get Phillip to call me on my mobile. I want this room to reflect strength,” Harrison trails off as he approaches the main bay window of the office.Jason continues taking notes and the CEO looks out over the city.He catches his own reflection in the glass and examines himself. Slowly his expression begins to soften.“What time would you like to meet Philip?” Jason asks. The CEO turns and looks at him confused.“Sorry?” He asks with a look of someone who has just awoken from a trance.“You wanted to talk to Phillip about this office...you want this room to...” Jason says as he checks his notes. “...Reflect strength I think it what you said.” Jason continues.“I did...I did. Tomorrow at nine. I think... yes tomorrow at nine,” Harrison replies. The CEO begins to leave the office.“You did plan to meet the board again at ...well now actually,” Jason says as he checks the time.“I did. Okay. Let’s meet the board,” The CEO says as he leaves the office. He enters the main board room and greets everyone with a smile. All the executives look at him with utter confusion. He takes a seat at the head of the table and looks down at the remaining executives who are busy presenting several projects at once.“Please. Please. One at a time....” he says. The room grows silent and one executive raises his hand. The CEO points at him and the man stands to pitch his plan. The CEO sits back in his chair as the nervous executive stumbles through a presentation. The CEO’s eyes move around the room at the faces and nervous expressions of his board of executives. He is unclear of what caused the change, but is happy none the less.He takes a deep breath and whispers to himself, “so, fear is the key...”The End.

Small Town Girl: A Berkley Short Story by Sean Ryan

Berkley walks through a crowded airport terminal. She looks at her watch and starts to increase her pace, moving through the crowd as quickly as possible.“Sorry...excuse me...sorry,” she shouts as she rushes through the wave of people. She pushes through the main doors of the terminal and towards a throng of taxis.Berkley sits in the first available taxi and throws her suitcase on the car seat. The Taxi Driver looks over his sunglasses at her.“Where to?” he asks, looking less than interested.Berkley struggles with the seatbelt.Berkley drops the belt and takes a smart-phone from her pocket. She taps the screen and opens her address book.“Olympus corporation headquarters. It’s on twelve...” she starts.“It’s okay honey, I know where that is,” the driver replies. The taxi slowly hovers off the ground as it turns, flying in the opposite direction.“You new in town?” the driver asks.Berkley smiles as she struggles with the belt, finally locking it in place.“Is it that obvious?” she replies. The driver smiles into the rear view mirror.“Oh...only a little,” the driver says as he takes a left.Berkley looks out the passenger side window and is amazed by the scale of the city. The city bustles with various lanes of hovercars above them and people walking quickly to their various destinations.“Where’re you from?” the driver asks.Berkley continues to gaze out the window.“Nebraska... right smack in the middle of nowhere,” she replies.“So what brings you here?” the drivers asks.“Job interview and I’m afraid I might be late,” Berkley says.“Not a problem, little lady. We’re just here,” The driver responds back. The car slowly descends onto the road below.A jet black bike zooms past and shakes the car.The cabby hangs out the driver side window and shouts at the rider.“Crazy woman!” he screams. The rider gives a calm wave and turns into the building as fast as she can.Berkley steps from the car and hands the driver her money. He examines the money and shakes his head.“Too much kid. Do yourself a favor. Remember you’re in the big city now,” the driver nods and hands her back some of the money.“Thanks. I wasn’t sure how much to tip,” she says.“You have to act big city to make it in the big city....youknow?” the driver says.“I think so,” she replies with a smile.“Take care of yourself and best of luck with the job,” the driver shouts as he drives away.Berkley turns and looks up at the Olympus headquarters. She takes a deep breath and enters the building.“Act big city...no problem,” she says to herself as she trips on the main steps. She enters the building. The main reception area is a lavish collection of marble walls and floor. People fill the area going about their daily routines.Berkley turns and looks up at a large mural on the ceiling of the reception area and turns, knocking over the security guard’s coffee as she bumps the desk.He screams as the hot liquid splashes against his lap.“Sorry...” she says. The security guard jumps back from his desk and looks down at his stained trousers.“Not again. That’s it. I’m giving it up,” he says.“I’m here for the...” she starts to say.“Assistant’s position?” he asks.Berkley attempts a smile.“Yes. I’m a ....” she says. The security guard slides her a badge.“Fifth floor. But if I were you I would take my time. There’s like fifty ahead of you...” he replies as he walks away to change his pants.“Fifty?” she asks. The number hits her like a ton of bricks. She walks to the elevator looking dejected.Berkley gets off on the fifth floor and is immediately met by two long rows of people sitting on either side of the narrow hallway. At least fifty people going for the same job. All dressed in various business and dress suits. All looking more prepared then she is.She looks down at her jeans and quickly realizes that because of the rushing, she never changed for the interview.Berkley shuffles into a bathroom and tries to change her appearance. She takes a ruffled jacket from her suitcase and puts it on. She tries to fix her makeup and drops her lipstick into the sink.“I wouldn’t rush honey, some of us have been here for over an hour and no one has even been interviewed yet,” a young woman says to Berkley. She walks up behind her and fixes her own makeup.“But to be honest...” the woman says. The woman steps back and looks Berkley up and down.“I wouldn’t hold up much hope. This job is mine.” she says, blowing Berkley a kiss while looking at her in the mirror.“Best of luck now,” the woman says as she walks towards the door, “you’re going to need it...” she laughs as she leaves.Berkley looks toward her suitcase, before looking at her own clothes.Berkley walks from the bathroom and gives the woman a nod.Now dressed in a short black skirt and white blouse, she looks stunning. The men in the hall all look up from what they’re doing to check her out.Berkley blushes as she takes a seat. The woman looks less than impressed as she approaches Berkley.“Won’t do you much good honey. I have more references than your skinny behind has had hot dinners. Do yourself a favor and go home,” the woman says.Berkley looks up at her with a smile.“We’ll see won’t we,” Berkley says. The woman walks back to her seat. She looks at her watch as time passes. The crowd becomes more agitated with every passing minute.A few people leave. Others start to look for someone to complain to.Berkley looks over at the woman who waves at her with a very forced smile.Berkley begins to examine the hallway. The cameras. The biometric locks on doors. She opens her bag and takes out her smart-phone.Berkley starts to select various applications on her phone. She slides the phone into two screens. One is a touch screen showing a keyboard, the other is a selection of program code.Berkley begins to tap on the board and launches several applications. Changing options. Hacking codes.Within a matter of seconds she has logged onto the buildings main security systems and is viewing room plans, camera locations and basically everything to do with the building. She looks around at the group of about forty people and back down at the phone’s screen. She grimaces for a second before selecting an option.Instantly, the fire alarm blares and everyone begins to run for the exits.Berkley smiles to herself and moves to the front of the line. She sits down and turns off the alarm, as she checks the time on her watch.Almost instantly the door to the interview room opens and Katherine walks out to greet Berkley.“I’m Katherine. Alex will see you now,” Katherine says.“I’m...” Berkley starts.“We know who you are. Please,” Katherine replies as she raises a hand to invite Berkley inside the meeting room.Berkley looks to see the woman walking back up the hallway.Berkley turns and waves giving the woman the same type of forced smile.Berkley enters. The room is massive with a large oak table in the center of the room.Alex stands at the far side of the room, looking out the expansive windows.“Please take a seat,” Alex says to her as she enters.Berkley is taken by the lavish room. She sits at the table with a look of both amazement and intimidation. She rubs her now sweating plans on her skirt to dry them.Alex walks over to join her. Katherine remains in the background, observing, but not joining in.“I’m just waiting on someone else to join us for the congratulations,” Alex says as he sits.“But...? I thought this was an interview...” Berkley says.“Oh it is... Was... You see we know everything about each and every candidate. More than we could learn from any round of interviews or questions. Everyone has been very carefully selected before we even invited you here,” Alex says.Berkley shuffles in her seat.“May I see it?” Alex asks.“What. I’m sorry. May you see what?” Berkley replies.“Your phone,” Alex says. “You see we need people to act... Adapt. To get things done. That is why we decided on more of a trial run in the hallway. Sort out those who may succeed from those who would just quit.”Berkley hands Alex her phone.“Your little stunt was bold. But very clever,” he says.Berkley attempts a smile.“Am I expected to believe you hacked into our state of the art. Multi-million dollar security system with this? An off the shelf computer phone?” Alex asks.He looks over at Katherine who nods.“Well yes. But not exactly off the shelf. I’ve made some adjustments and modifications... I modeled it on NASA specs and then, um, improved it some...” Berkley says.“Then my dear, you can see why the interview would have been worthless,” he says, handing her the phone. “And why you have the job. You got the task done. Made the most of a bad situation and worked it to your advantage.”The main door opens and Sam walks into the room.“Finally! Berkley, I want you to meet the team leader, Sam,” Alex says.Berkley stands and holds out her hand.“Sam. Meet the new personal assistant Berkley,” Alex says to Sam.Sam smiles as he holds out his hand to shake Berkley’s.“Welcome to team Zeus,” Sam says.Berkley shakes his hand and smiles.“One of your first projects will be to improve the security systems around here,” Alex says.Berkley nods.“Come on, I want to introduce you to the others,” Sam says.Berkley follows Sam from the room, the door closing behind them.“I wasn’t sure about her when she entered the building. Looked a little out of her depth. But you were right Katherine,” Alex says, tapping a screen to replay footage of Berkley hacking the security systems.“This little test of yours was ingenious,” Alex says.“She was in my top ten from the start. I’m happy she lived up to expectations. She has an exceptional aptitude for technology, as she demonstrated,” Katherine says.Alex walks to the window and looks out at the city skyline.“She’s perfect...” Alex says. The End.

Heart on her Sleeve: A Katherine Short Story by Sean Ryan

Katherine rides a jet black hover bike to a stop at the light. She is dressed from head to toe in black leather, which compliments her perfectly. Her identity is hidden behind a full face helmet with a mirrored visor.A yellow sports car stops beside her at the light. Four teenage boys hang from the windows of the car as soon as they notice her.“Hey baby, wanna race?" One of the boys yells at her.The other boys burst out laughing.“You sure you can handle that bike?” another roars.Katherine turns her head. The motorized visor slowly opens to reveal piercing green eyes. The boys in the car grow silent. Their expressions change as they look into Katherine’s hypnotic stare.“Think you can handle me?” she asks with a wide smile.Katherine revs the bike hard which blows a trail of smoke behind her.Her visor lowers again and Katherine releases the clutch. The bike roars into life, leaving the car behind. The boys snap out of their trance and chase after her.Katherine zigs in and out of traffic, whizzing by the cars as they speed by. She commands the lanes like a champion racer. She darts between two cars and turns a corner, leaning the bike hard and nearly grazing her knee on the concrete. The sports car continues the pursuit, hot on her tail and closing fast.Katherine leaps onto the sidewalk, sending people diving in all directions away from this event. She cuts a small plastic table in half outside a cafe, which grabs the attention of a police patrolman, sirens wailing as she flies by him.Katherine looks into her bike's mirror. Where there was one policeman there is now two.The sports car slows down and is quickly boxed in by two other patrol cars. Katherine pushes the bike to it’s limits. Katherine takes the bike into a wheelie, zipping in and out of cars, leaving the police cars behind.Katherine lets out a cry of pain, as she collides with the side mirror of a truck. She struggles to stay on the bike, wobbling for several feet before she steadies the bike and turns a corner.Katherine calmly drives into an underground garage of the Olympus headquarters, as three Police cars whiz past her.Katherine parks her bike, removes her helmet and makes her way to the elevator. The elevator door opens on a floor of lavish looking offices.Katherine walks from the elevator and makes her way to her own office. She removes her leather jacket to examine the effects of her impact with the truck. She looks down at a sizeable bruise on her right arm. Katherine flexes her fingers and moves her arm. Nothing broken.“You know I could hook you up with a nice company car,” Alex says.Katherine looks up straight into the eyes of Alex, who is dressed as usual in a tailor-made suit, passing by her in the hallway toward her office.“Why Alex, are you concerned for my safety?” she asks, smirking.Alex taps the screen on a tablet size computer, almost ignoring her.“Oh...not at all. Just figured a car would be more comfortable. That’s all...” he replies as he taps the computer screen.Katherine looks disappointed as she gazes at the back of his head.“Where would the fun be in that. Besides... no substitute for a bike. It gets the blood pumping.” She smiles at him as he turns.“My office in ten. I want to go over the spec of the Pegasus with you. They are still having issues. I need someone to get it done,” Alex says. She tosses the helmet and leather jacket to her male assistant as she opens her office door and walks inside. The office walls are mostly glass. The one solid wall holds a collection of various certificates and awards for martial arts tournaments along with various weapons in glass cases.Katherine steps into her office bathroom and takes a shower.Later, Alex stands in his office watching several screens on the far wall, as Katherine enters, dressed in a suit. She walks up behind him and examines the same screens. One screen shows the team training. The other shows Gaia sitting in the recreation room watching television.“I see she's still not playing ball then?” Katherine asks.Alex rubs his chin and nods.“Do you want me to handle it?” Katherine asks.“No. Not for now. For now I think we need the more gentle approach. I’ll talk with Sam. See if he can shake some sense into her,” Alex replies.“So what was so urgent?” Katherine asks.He clicks a remote and the screen changes to show blue prints of the Pegasus and a hangar where the craft is half dismantled.“This... they assured me it would be working last week and now we have hit more delays with technical stuff,” Alex says.“And you need me to....” Katherine asks.“Be you. Get results. Kick some ass. I need this ship operational. I need to show this team how invested I am in them. Show them what they mean to me...” Alex says.Alex clicks off the screens and turns to Katherine. He leans in close to her. “We are so close Katherine. But these kids are still pulling in different directions. You know how much this team means to me...means to us. I can’t do this without you. You know that,” Alex says.Their eyes meet for a second. Katherine seems unable to speak. They look as if they might kiss. She starts to expect it, want it.Alex breaks away.“Excuse me, I have another meeting to attend. But first I need to speak with Sam,” Alex says as he walks away.Katherine shakes her head, as if breaking from a trance. She blinks and bites her lip as she turns to Alex.“When do you want me to update you on...” Katherine asks.“Busy day. How about dinner, as we’ve both been working too hard. Tonight nine o’clock,” he says as he opens the door.“I’ll leave details of the when and where with Jean,” Alex shouts back at her as he leaves. She tries to reply, but the door slams shut behind him.Katherine sits on the chair and spins around.“This day might not be too bad after all...” she says to herself. The restaurant is busy. Couples sit at tables in various locations. Waiters rush around like people possessed.Katherine looks at her watch and picks up her cell phone.“I thought we were having dinner at 9:00?” She says down to the phone.“I’m sorry. I’ll have to take a rain check. Something’s come up that I can’t discuss over the phone. I’ll get that update from you first thing in the morning” Alex says on the phone.“It’s all work and no play with you Alex isn’t it?” she replies, a tone of anger and disappointment in her voice.“Look I’m sorry. I’ll send a car for you...” Alex says.“Fine. You do your thing. I’ll make my own way home. See you bright and early,” she says as she hangs up the phone and smashes it onto the table.A drink spills and a waiter rushes to clean the mess.“It’s fine!” she shouts at him.The waiter steps back as he catches the tense look in her eyes.Katherine takes a deep breath and her eyes relax as she realizes how she's acting.“Sorry... I’m sorry,” she says to the waiter. She smiles and the waiter immediately relaxes. He cleans the mess and looks at her with concern.“Is there anything else I can get you?” he asks.Katherine just looks at her phone as he replies.“No. I’m fine. Thank you,” she says as the waiter walks away from her table.Bored and dejected, she sits back in her chair and looks at the clock on the wall. Eleven fifteen.Katherine walks out of the restaurant toward a nightclub across the way.Katherine walks through the night club. She looks around the room at various people talking and dancing. Her eyes dart around, almost like a predator seeking out their prey.Men look at her and smile. Some ignoring the people they are with. One married man looks in a trance as she passes. He looks consumed by her. His wife isn’t and throws a drink in her husband's face. It has little effect and he continues to watch Katherine, even as she ignores him and passes him by.A younger man approaches Katherine, but she just pushes him away.“Too short,” she says. She walks towards another man.“Too young,” Katherine says to herself. She stops in front of a well-built tall man, and her eyes examine him from head to toe. He looks very similar to Alex.“Just perfect,” she says as she holds out her hand. The man follows her without talking, leaving his friends behind.Katherine escorts the man through the club, towards the main door. A row of dazed men follow her like sick puppies.“What’s you name honey?” she asks.“Eh...Christopher. It’s Chris,” he replies.Katherine smiles to herself as she runs her hand over the security guard's face at the main door and blows him a kiss. The guard smiles at her and looks in a daze as two women sneak past him into the club.Katherine drags Chris into the street.Immediately the men break from her spell and look at each other. Walking away, they all share the same look of utter confusion.“Where’s your place, Alex?” she asks.Chris looks at her confused.“Chris. You just called me Alex?” Chris replies.Katherine throws her leg over her bike and looks at Chris.“Did I...my bad.” she shrugs.“Get on,” she says.Chris climbs on the back of the bike and puts on a spare helmet.Katherine catches a glimpse of herself in the bike’s mirror. She studies herself for a moment before looking away and putting on her helmet.“Hold on!” she shouts, starting the bike and ripping onto the street.Chris holds her tight and she laughs to herself, thinking of how much faster she can go. THE END

Both with thesame look of awe and wonder on their faces.“Coooooool” they both say at exactly the same time.Medusa lowers her glasses to have a better look. The ship looks like a modernized, wingless stealth fighter. It stretches over a hundred feet in length.“Is this...” Sam starts to ask.“Yes. This is Team Zeus’s transport. I couldn’t have my bestand brightest taking the bus everywhere, now could I?” Alexreplies.“Fully armed. It can travel at speeds of mach 10....” Alexsays.“Do you mind?” he asks as he removes the sword from Medusa’sback. He runs the blade along the side of the craft and hands thesword back to her. The scratched panels slowly healthemselves and the mark disappears.“Self-piloted. Self-healing, fully stealth capable,” Alexcontinues.“Self-piloted, isn’t that a little dull?” Heph asks.“Well it can be flown manually, but mach ten is a little toofast for the human mind to cope with... “Alex replies.“How about a God’s mind?” Hermes laughs.“Touche. But for today, I’ll think we’ll let the computerfly,” Alex says.“No fair,” Heph mutters to himself.Alex throws a communicator to Sam.“Here. Each of you will find one inside the passenger bay,”he says.Alex taps his communicator and a large ramp lowers from thecraft.“Anyone fancy a test drive?” Alex asks.Hermes blasts into the Pegasus, almost knocking Heph over.“Me first,” Hermes shouts as he runs past everyone into thecraft.Medusa and Gaia follow Heph onboard.Alex claps Sam on the back as they enter the Pegasus.“Do you mind sitting with me in the cockpit? I want to goover a few things with you,” Alex asks.Sam nods as they enter the Pegasus. The inside of the craft is a high tech dream. Screens showingvarious computer readouts, satellite images and scanningequipment. Each of the team pick their seats as Sam and Alex walk uptowards the cockpit.“Hey how come we don’t get to ride up front?” Heph asks.“Because the child seat is back here....just for you," Medusaanswers.“Hardy har har. Who died and gave you a sense of humor?” Hephreplies.Medusa sits back in the chair and crosses her legs.“Don’t think much of the in-flight entertainment?” she saysas she ignores Heph.“Now children. Play fair,” Gaia says laughing to herself.Alex and Sam sit down in the cockpit.“Thanks for this. It’s amazing,” Sam says.“I just wanted to show you that I’m committed and invested inthis team. You have my full resources. My full attention,”Alex replies.Alex places his hand on a biometric reader and the ship roarsinto life.Sam’s face lights up as the ship slowly lifts of the landingpad. Hovering above the roof of the Olympus headquarters.A three-dimensional hologram of the globe appears on thedashboard in front of them.“Where would you like to go?" Alex asks.Sam touches the globe with his fingers and the globe startsto spin.“Anywhere?" Sam questions.“Anywhere. You decide,” Alex states.Sam spins the hologram even faster and pushes his fingerinwards.“Such a hard decision,” Sam says.“That is a part of you that you must change. You need to makechoices and stick to them. Not look back and question them, no regrets. That alone is one element of a great leader, making the tough choices,” Alex says.Sam spins the globe again.“Do you think I have what it takes?” Sam asks.“I believe in you more than you know. Would I havegone to all this trouble, building this team if I didn't?”Alex says.Alex selects a destination for him.“Here let me show you something,” Alex says. The Pegasus turns and starts to fly straight up into the sky, blasting forward quickly as it does.Alex starts to strap himself in and he talks into thePegasus’s intercom.“You might want to put your belts on and check your lunch. This is going to get fast,” Alex says.Hermes smirks as he straps himself in.The Pegasus jumps to full speed and Heph is thrown back intohis seat.“Yehaa, just like a roller coaster,” Hermes shouts.“But much cooler,” Gaia smiles. The Pegasus starts to climb at an amazing rate.Sam and Alex are pushed back into their seats as the skybegins to grow darker and darker. The ship's speed starts to slow as it enters the Earth'satmosphere.Sam is clearly awe-struck of the sight of the amazing canvasof stars in front of them.Alex clicks a button and one of the walls in the transportarea of the ship changes into a large viewing area. One sideshowing the Earth below, the other showing the stars above.“Oh my goodness,” Gaia gasps.“Amazing, simply amazing,” Heph says.Medusa tips her glasses to look with her own eyes. She letsherself indulge in a rare smile as she beholds the sight infront of her.“This team has massive potential to make a difference in this world, a positive one. But without a leader, without you, it will be nothing. That is why the team should be namedafter you.” Alex says.Sam laughs, “Team Sam?” “No. Not your human name. Team Zeus. Your team,” Alexreplies.“But how will the others react to me being their leader?” Samasks.“You already are their leader. I’ve been watching them, watching you carefully. I know you're more than capable. Ineed you to do this. They need you,” Alex says.Sam looks down at the Earth below.“Where do I sign?” Sam replies.“Excellent. Now shall we take this baby home?” Alex says.Alex selects a new destination on the globe and the shipstarts to turn. The ship begins its descent and the team scramble back totheir seats. The bow of the craft glows bright white as the Pegasus rapidly makes it way back to the Olympus Corp headquarters. It lands and the team disembarks.“Next time can I...” Heph starts to say.“No!” Alex and Sam shout at the same time.Heph drops his head and walks from the roof.“Bummer...” he mutters to himself.Sam looks back at Alex.“When do I tell the others?” Sam asks.“Your team. Your choice. I’m just the guy who signs thechecks now,” Alex says.He claps Sam on the back and he follows the others inside.“Hey Zeus,” he shouts after Sam.Sam turns.“But remember, I will still be watching,” Alex says as hesmiles at Sam.Sam turns back to the team and runs to catch up with them.Alex’s smile fades as he looks at the Pegasus. He places both hands on his hips.“Team Zeus,” he mutters to himself.Later that evening, Alex walks to a wall in his office andpresses a panel on the wall. The panels all slide back to reveal a small room filled withscreens. Each screen shows different locations within thebuilding. The training room. The team's sleeping quarters. Theirrecreation room. The Pegasus. Each screen shows a locationthat the team may vacate during the course of their day.Alex taps a console and rewinds several pieces of footage. He observes the training session from earlier that day. Watching each of the team's performance and reactions. He selects another screen and watches them eating. Watches them sleeping. Watches every aspect of their lives. Forwarding and rewinding. Pausing and observing.Alex sits back in his chair. The sun sets in the background, seen through a large window. He continues to watch the screens with almost obsessiveattention. The end.

Gaia sits alone in a recreation room. She clicks a remote and channel surfs the television. Shestops on a fashion show and sits back into her chair.Sam sticks his head in the door and calls to her.“There you are. We were looking all over for you.” he says.Gaia blows on her wet nails and she looks up at him.“Been here all morning, what’s the panic?” she replies.“You’re late for training” Sam says. Looking less thanimpressed.“It’s all training with you. I’ll be up in a while.” she saysas she examines her perfectly painted nails.“I wish you would take this team more seriously.” Sam says ashe leaves.Gaia mimics his voice “I wish you would take this team moreseriously.” she says.“Boys.” she mutters to herself. She continues to watch the latest fashions on the televisionscreen and looks down at her outfit.“I really, really need some new clothes.” she mutters toherself. She looks across the room at the wall mounted surveillancecamera and smiles to herself.Gaia stands and walks towards the door of the room, steppingunder the camera and out of it’s line of sight. She walks into a narrow hallway and notices two cameras oneither side of the wall.Gaia places a hand on one side of the wall and the plasterbegins to warp into a bubble. The bubble quickly travels upand pushes one of the cameras into the ceiling tile.“Oops a daisy.” she laughs. She steps under the line of sight of the other camera andinto an elevator. The elevator opens on the ground floor of the New Olympusheadquarters. She strolls towards a security guards desk and places bothhands on it. The large marble desk shakes and the guardscoffee lands on his lap.He leaps back in pain and Gaia walks right out the frontdoor. She walks into the street and takes a deep breathe as shesmiles to herself.“I love the smell of freedom.” she says as she crosses thestreet.Gaia walks through a massive shopping mall. The mall isfilled with people shopping and hanging out.Gaia looks very pleased with herself as she strolls along, soaking in the atmosphere.Clothes shops. Music shops. Salons. She spins around, armsoutstretched. Gaia has found her home.“Gaby?” a girl calls out.She spins around and looks straight at Sally and Joyce. Bothseverally overdressed for a day at the mall.“Sally...Joyce?” she replies looking both shocked andembarrassed.“Is that you girl?” Sally asks as she runs over to Gaia.“In the flesh.” she replies.“But we heard you had moved to Canada or some other foreignplace like that?” Joyce replies.“No I’ve been around. Just busy is all.” Gaia replies. The girls all share air kisses.Sally steps back and looks at Gaia’s clothes.“Now what are we wearing?” Sally asks.“Just shut up and don’t ever.” Gaia replies. Her accentstarting to change along with her choice of words.“Now this we have to fix.” Joyce replies, as she steps backto examine Gaia’s clothes. The three girls laugh and joke as they walk towards a largeclothing store. The three sit outside a coffee shop. Gaia now dressed in anexpensive black Prada outfit.“I owe you for this...for everything. Things have like beenso strange of late. It’s nice to be with friends again.” Gaiasays.Joyce looks at her watch.“It’s getting so late...see you girls later.” she says. The girls air kiss once more and Joyce leaves.Sally finishes her coffee and stands.“Come on, I have this great little store to show you.” shesays.Gaia and Sally walk down a run down street.“Isn’t this like a little down market for you?” Gaia asks.“For sure.” Sally replies. “But if you want bargains, youhave to wander off the beaten...ya know? Sally replies.Gaia and Sally walk down a now empty street and quicklynotice two teen boys ahead of them. The boys are walkingtowards them. The two girls immediately become uncomfortable and turn inthe other direction. They stop as they see two more approaching from the otherdirection.Sally drags Gaia down an alley and they try to open a door. But the door is locked.Gaia looks around for an escape route, a ladder too far fromthe ground. A fence too high to climb. They are trapped, cornered. They look back up the alley, as the group of four boys walktowards them.“Well, Well, Well.” one of the boys shouts.John dressed in jeans and a hoodie leads the other three boysin the girl’s direction.“No one told me they ordered takeout?” he laughs.Gaia looks for an escape. Looks for someone to help. They arein trouble.Gaia reaches for her cell phone. No signal.Sally routes through her bag for her and drops it, spillingthe contents onto the ground.Another of the boys, Paul, takes a knife from his pocket andflicks it open and closed several times.“What’s the matter? Daddy not coming to rescue his littleprincesses?” Paul asks.Gaia and Sally walks backwards and into a wall. They aretrapped. The four teenage boys walk slowly towards them.“Cute little things aren’t they?” one of the boys shouts.“Please just let us go...I” she says.“Remember you’re in our part of town now, little rich girl.So we decide when you leave...if you leave” John shouts. One of the other boys howls like a dog.“You don’t want to do this” Gaia replies.“Oh I do like a girl with attitude.” John says.Gaia clenches both fists and then opens her hands. The groundbelow her feet starts to crack and vibrate. She looks up at the four boys with an intense expression onher face.“Don’t say I didn’t warn you” she says. The ground in front of Gaia cracks open and rips towards thefour boys. They dive to avoid being sucked into the trench.Gaia raises both hands and the rest of the alleyway is suckedinto the mini earthquake. The walls of the adjoining building start to shake and crack.Bricks and mortar fall into the crater that was once thealley. The building to their right collapses inwards onto itself.Sally screams.John falls into the cracked ground and screams, as Paul grabshis hand and pulls him up.The boys stagger back down the alleyway as Gaia lowers herhands. The ground raises back up.“You still want to play?” she smiles.None of the boys answer, just run away as quickly as theirlegs will carry them.Gaia looks at her right hand and notices she has broken anail.“Dammit” she says.Still smiling she looks up at a shocked Sally.“So those...those stories were true? Our neighborhood, thepolice at our house, the questions. At first we thought itwas just an earthquake then the stories. People said youcaused it. That’s why they took you away. Because you weredifferent...because you were dangerous.” Sally screams.Gaia’s memories take her back to that day when she caused anearthquake. Her neighborhood lies in ruins. Rescue helicopters flyoverhead. Police and ambulances parked everywhere as rescuersshift through remains of houses for survivors. The damage appears to spread out for miles.Gaia stares up at her father who looks at her with tears inhis eyes.“Daddy....I...” she says.He just looks at his daughter and repeats the same sentence.“What did you do? What did you do?” He asks, his voicetrembling.Gaia snaps out of her memory. Her fathers voice still ringingin her ears.“It wasn’t my fault. I couldn’t control it then...I can now.” Gaia replies.“Control what? What are you? You destroyed our homes. Peoplewere hurt...lost everything because of you!” Sally replies.Sally runs from the alley.“What are you doing, I thought we were friends?” Gaia shoutsat Sally.“That was a long time ago girl” Sally replies.“You’re a freek. Nothing more.” Sally shouts as waves for ataxi.“Stay away from me. I never want to see you again.” Sallyshouts.Gaia looks at the car as Sally gets in and it speeds away.A tear rolls down her face.“But I didn’t mean to...” she replies.Back in the recreation room, Gaia sits in the same chairwatching the television. Now dressed in her old clothes. She flicks on a news station.A female newscaster stands in front of a fire engine andpolice cars at the scene of an unknown event.“Experts are still unsure about the source of this seismicevent which is believed to have measured a very dangerous 6.5on the Richter scale.” the newscaster says.Sam opens the door to the recreation room.Gaia leaps to her feet.“But have no explanation as to why the quakes damage wascontained to a single area of this down town...” thenewscaster continues.Gaia clicks the remote and the TV goes off.“What was that?” Sam asks.“Oh. Nothing...just old news.” Gaia replies. She throws down the remote.“Team training?” she asks.“Yeah are you going to make this session?” Sam asks.“You know me. All about the team.” she smiles.Sam tilts his head and looks at her.“Since when?” He asks.“Well. I figured it was time I got more involved. Starttaking this thing a bit more seriously...” she says.Sam smiles and opens the door wider for her.“Besides I’m starting to think that maybe I belong here.” shereplies. She steps through the door.“Glad to have you back on board.” Sam replies as he followsher into the hallway. The end.

Me too.” he says as he holds hisdaughter tight. She looks up at him but he is now more concerned withsomething else. Something on the water.“Dad what is it?” she asks. She looks towards what has taken his attention. Two PT patrolboats are moving towards their boat at speed.“Get down below baby and stay there. No matter what happensstay there.” he says.He looks deep into his daughters now terrified eyes.“I’m scared” she replies.“I know honey. But we’ll be OK. We always are” he says as hekisses her on the forehead.“Now go. Quickly” Thomas shouts.Sarah runs below deck and closes the main hatch to the lowerdeck.Thomas turns back towards the approaching boats and swallowshis spit. He blesses himself and kisses the crucifix aroundhis neck. The two PT boats pull up alongside the yacht. Each of the boats carry armed men. By their dress they areclearly not in uniform. They are not sailors or coast guards, they are pirates.Thomas takes a deep breathe and stands proud.Lee Wang, the leader of the pirates. Stands at the bow of oneof the PT boats. He looks on from behind a mirrored pair ofaviator sunglasses. A wide grin on his face.“May we come aboard” Lee asks.“Would it make any difference if I said no?” Thomas replies.Lee steps on board, accompanied by two men with machine guns.“Now is that anyway to talk to me, considering you are guestsin my waters” Lee replies.“I wasn’t aware the waters around her belonged to anyone...”Thomas replies.Lee starts to laugh.“Americans... Americans. Come down here with your expensiveboats and think you can just go where you like. Do what youlike” Lee replies.Lee stands nose to nose with Thomas.“Everyone has to pay taxes. Lee replies.“Oh so you’re tax collectors?” Thomas replies.“What would you call us? Pirates? Such an old fashion term.I’m a business man.” Lee smiles.“How much. How much to leave us alone?” Thomas replies.Lee walks around Thomas, looking at the yacht.“Oh. Let me see...” Lee replies. He raises one hand above his head and more of his men boardthe yacht.“How about everything...” Lee replies.“Check below.” he shouts at one of his men.Thomas looks more nervous. “Please. Take what you want. Justlet us go on our way”. He replies.“Oh now you act civilized. I’ll tell you what. I’ll doexactly what I want and if you’re lucky. I’ll let you live”Lee smiles. One of the Pirates looks nervous.“What’s wrong with you man?” Lee asks.“I told you. These...these waters are cursed.” the piratereplies.“Oh please. Village gossip and folklore nonsense” Leereplies.“But. But...” the pirate replies.Lee looks less than impressed.“Anyone else feel the need to leave because of these ghoststories you seem to think are true? Lee asks.Lee takes out his pistol as he waits for replies from hismen.“Good. Now get on with your jobs” he shouts. Two men go below deck. Thomas now looks terrified as heawaits Sarah’s discovery.Lee walks over to Thomas.“So sorry. My men are good men. But they are afraid of thesewaters. Silly village talk of sharks that walk on land andother crazy ghost stories.” he laughs.A pirate drags Sarah above deck, she falls and calls out toher father.“Daddy...” Sarah shouts.Thomas moves towards his daughter and Lee places his pistolagainst Thomas’s head.“Easy now think about your actions.” Lee smiles.Thomas steps back.“Good boy” Lee says.Lee turns and looks at Sarah, as he smiles to himself.“And what might your name be?” Lee says to the girl.Thomas can no longer contain himself.“Don’t touch her!” Thomas shouts. He is struck from behind and collapses to his knees.“Silence. Or I will have you fed to the sharks.” Lee replies. He looks back at the Sarah.“You will fetch a handsome price...blonde girls always do”.He says as he runs his fingers through her hair.Sarah starts to cry and Lee laughs. He looks around the deck of the yacht.“Nice ship. You must be worth a lot of money my friend.” hesays to Thomas.Thomas staggers to his feet.“Which means it may be worthwhile to keep you alive...for awhile at least.” Lee says.“Tie them together. We will toe this vessel to...” he failsto finish his sentence.A pirate calls out from one of the PT boats.“Captain” he shouts.“What now” Lee says to himself as he runs over to the PTboat. The pirate looks at a sonar screen on one of the PT boats andcalls to his Captain.“Ca...Captain...something is approaching us. Look.” He saysas he points at a dot on the sonar screen.A green dot moves towards their position.“A shoal of Fish?” Lee asks. The pirate shakes his head as he examines the readings.“Too fast...” the pirate replies. The dot continues to close in on their position.“Man the sixty and empty some rounds into it” Lee shouts. Two pirates run towards the gun mounted on the bow of the PTboat. The gun is readied within seconds.“Fire!” Lee shouts at the men.The Pirate opens fire sending spent shells in everydirection. The water at the front of the boat is hit bymultiple rounds. The sonar operator smiles as the dot on the sonar disappears.“Whatever it is, it’s gone” he calls to Lee.Lee claps the man on the back and walks back onto the yacht. The nervous pirate smiles as he looks at the man beside him.“See nothing to worry about. Now back to business...” Leesays. One of the men is grabbed from behind and is dragged into thewater before anyone can react. The nervous pirate lets out a scream.“Take it easy” Lee shouts as he aims his pistol.Another man is swiped from the deck and another. All the pirates start to move to the centre of the yacht, forming a circle. Each one aiming their weapons at the ocean. The nervous pirate jumps into the water and starts to swimfor it.Lee grabs a machine gun and aims it as the swimming pirate.“Come back you coward!” He calls after the man. Before Lee can shoot. The nervous Pirate is sucked under thewater and disappears.Lee takes off his sunglasses and swallows his spit.Lee aims the gun around the deck of the ship, waiting for thenext attack.A figure leaps from the water at the stern of the yacht andsmashes his feet onto the deck of the ship. Two of the pirates turn and raise their weapons at him. Thefigure dives at the two men and knocks them into the ocean.“What was that...what the hell was that? One of the Piratesshouts.“Just a man...“ Lee replies, trying to calm his men.“That was no man. Did you see those eyes....” a piratereplies.Lee walks around the deck of the boat, aiming the gun.Waiting for the next attack.Another scream behind him. He swings around and shoots.Hitting one of his own men and sending him overboard.Lee lowers the gun, clearly annoyed. He turns and looks straight into the face of Poseidon. Theystand almost nose to nose.Lee looks into Poseidon eye’s and razor sharp teeth. Poseidonis in full shark frenzy mode.Lee is frozen with fear. “What...what are you.” he asks withobvious fear in his voice.Lee tries to run but Poseidon leaps above him and lands onthe mans back. Lee crashes into the deck.“Shoot him....shoot it.” Lee calls to the remains of his men.One of the pirates opens fire with a machine gun. Bullets ripthrough the wooden deck of the yacht. Missing Lee by inches.“I said him not me...fools” Lee shouts.Poseidon dives and rolls overboard. A large splash and he isnowhere to be seen. The pirates open fire and riddle the water with bullets untiltheir guns are empty.“Did we hit it?” one of the pirates asks.Poseidon leaps onto the deck of one of the PT boats andquickly dispatches the two pirates on board. The machine gun operator from the other PT boat swings themounted gun around and opens fire, but is too slow. Poseidonrolls back into the ocean. The pirate continues to fire. Ripping the other PT boat topieces. Smoke pours from the crippled ship. The pirate stops firing and adjusts his aim.Poseidon leaps from the water behind him and drags the maninto the ocean below. Dragging him deeper and deeper.Lee turns and looks around in every direction.“How many of them are there?” one of the pirates shouts.Lee looks terrified and vulnerable, surrounded by ocean.Surrounded by possible attack points.“Bullets cannot kill that which is already dead” A pirateshouts. He looks at the crippled PT boat and then over the side ofthe yacht, into the deep ocean.Lee opens fire widely shooting the ocean around the vessel. As his weapon hits an empty chamber, another Pirate is rippedfrom the deck and disappears into the ocean.“Run!” He shouts to the few remaining men.“What about the hostages?” A pirate calls out.“Let those things have them” Lee replies as he leaps from theyacht onto the PT boat. The boat’s engines roar into life and the remaining piratesmake their escape.Poseidon stands behind Thomas and Sarah.Sarah turns and looks terrified. She steps behind her father.“I mean you no harm” Poseidon says. The couple turn to look at him, his eyes and teeth nownormal.Thomas’s fear quickly disappears.“Are you just going to let them go?” Thomas asks as he pointsat the retreating pirate boats.“Fear is a powerful weapon. Especially against cowards. Thestories of what they encountered here will make others thinktwice.” Poseidon replies.“But where did you come from?” Thomas asks.Poseidon smiles “From there” he points at the ocean andsmiles.Sarah grabs his hand. “Thank you” she says.“My pleasure.” Poseidon replies. He looks at her face. For a second she looks like someoneelse. Like his sister.“You remind me of someone. She is...was about your age.” hesays.“Someone you’ve lost?” Thomas asks.Poseidon nods. “A sister...But not lost... taken.” hereplies. His eyes grow black for a moment, as he becomesconsumed by the loss.“Sarah’s mother died just last year. She... we understandloss. That is the reason we came on this trip. To getaway....” Thomas says.Sarah walks to the bow of the ship and sits down.Poseidon’s eyes look distant for a moment, as memories washover him.He snaps back to reality and looks at Thomas.“I am sorry. I can see the sadness in her eyes. I’m glad Iwas here to help...” Poseidon replies.Thomas smiles at him.“Not as glad as us”. Thomas replies.“Now we must hurry, as these waters are very dangerousPoseidon says.Thomas laughs “You don’t say?”Thomas prepares the ship and fires up the boats engine.“What do we call you friend?” Thomas asks.“To my friends I’m known as Patrice, to others as Poseidon.”he replies.Thomas places out his hand and Poseidon shakes it.“Thank you Patrice. I’m Thomas Jordan and this is my daughterSarah.” Thomas says.Poseidon turns and looks towards the bow of the ship.“I will stay with you until you are safe” he tells them.He watches over Sarah as the yacht moves towards distantislands, towards safer waters. The End.
